Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day 2018 on Delmarva

Friday, March 30th is Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. First established in 2001, a number of dedicated individuals have worked tirelessly to see it made a national day of recognition and honor. Sadly, most of our veterans remember returning home from war to anything but a welcome, and for that reason I feel all of us can now step up and ensure to acknowledge their service and dedication. Of course, you don't need to wait for a specific date to shake the hand of someone who was there and say "Thank you for your service", but especially on March 29th and 30th there are a number of events being held to express our appreciation for what they have done. Read more about WHVVD here.

Please take the time to acknowledge our veterans this week and attend a local event to show your support for these men and women. See below for local events around Delaware and the eastern shore areas of Maryland and Virginia.

As I reviewed my previous blog post with the history of WHVVD I noticed that the website was down. Searching further, I learned that the gentleman I've followed for several years, Mr. Jose Ramos, an Army medic and Vietnam Veteran who dedicated much of his life working to establish a national day of honor for all who served in Vietnam, passed away in September. I'm not certain if he was the sole owner/admin of the WHVVD website, but if he was, that may explain why it is no longer active. Article from September 2017.

Baltimore, MD || Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day observance on March 30th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Held at Martin’s West, 6817 Dogwood Road, Baltimore, MD 21244. Click here to see details.

In northern Delaware, a ceremony was held on Saturday, March 24th to honor the fallen Vietnam Vets. "A year ago, an act of Congress was signed into law by President Donald Trump designating March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day. In honor of the newly created day commemorating all the veterans who served in Vietnam, the local Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1095 held a ceremony on Saturday in front of the old Delaware County Courthouse, 91 N. Sandusky St., Delaware." Article from 3.26.18 in the Delaware Gazette.

New York, also on Saturday the 24th: While not in our area, I was glad to see this an article about this event: "The purpose of this new event is to encourage our younger veterans to embrace Vietnam Veterans Day so that it will continue to be a meaningful commemoration of those who served and sacrificed in Vietnam, for years to come. The Tribute March will retrace the route of the 1985 Welcome Home Parade that celebrated the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at 55 Water Street. We encourage veterans of all eras, family members and supporters to join us".

We thank our soldiers and we honor those who went, served and sacrificed. Let us come together and acknowledge our Vietnam Veterans this coming week and take the time to shake the hand of a hero. To all of you, WELCOME HOME.
