Why Buy Handmade, Handcrafted, or Local Art?

I've been on this trend for about 15 years now, of spending more carefully in an effort to buy where my dollars do more. There are several ways to do this; one of the most rewarding experiences I've found is to really look closely at the dollars we let go of, and consider where we release them into the economy. Hear me out on this, as I share some thoughts on "buying better", and putting my money into the hands of people who will be positively impacted by my choices.

Handmade IS talent, time, passion, and dedication. It is NOT found in big box stores or online, as similarly marketed (and cheaper) products advertised as such are merely imported, inferior quality knockoffs. Handcrafted IS love, history, skill, and the livelihood of countless artists and makers from all walks of life.

Local art IS NOT for special occasions because it's "too expensive", it is a luxury in many cases, yes, but there are always options (if the giant painting isn't in your budget, purchase a smaller one and you can STILL display it in a place of honor. If the incredible handmade necklace is simply out of reach as a gift for mom or your best friend, look at earrings or a bracelet instead). Point is....taking time to FIND and SEE such alternatives is what may allow far more of us to purchase beautiful things instead of meaningless "stuff". Why not make this the year you and your family "spend better", but more intentionally and with greater thought? You will likely exchange fewer gifts, perhaps, but in 15 years when your friend or aunt or sister pulls out that special piece you gave this Christmas, they will instantly remember it was from you. That's tough to say about a bunch of cheap, imported stuff found at walmart. Let's do it. Let's commit to "buying better" this year, because good choices DO bring greater cheer. ❤️
