Reactive Rescue Pit Bull Challenges

Some days.... make you question everything. 🙄 Abused, neglected, and untrained dogs are already a challenge, and when one is easily overwhelmed it can be so discouraging.

Today I walked Raymond our rescued pit bull in our neighborhood, as we do every day, and he was HORRIBLE. We made it past the calm, quiet little dog, then past a former archenemy we now tolerate (both loose, but staying in their yards). Made it past construction site and someone on a scooter - I was working him through his commands, then letting him relax and sniff in fun places, and then we got to the House With The Tiny Screaming Yorkie and it all went south.

He was up in the air, scraming his monkey-like wail, growling and absolutely bersek. Backed up, refocused, sat, calmed down, tried again....total meltdown. Retreated, calmed down again, and by then owner and dog had moved towards the back of the property so we went by. Ray unfortunately still caught a glimpse of it and let out these horrible jungle-like screeches; i saw the lady's face and she looked horrified, disgusted and scared. I hate that Ray is still reverting to his original behavior like this - it's as if everything goes out of his brain and he's another personality. :( I can't not walk him, that solves nothing, but to have people terrified for their pets makes me feel horrible. And yes, I could have just turned around and walked away like we usually do but there were dogs behind us so I needed to go forward. Had treats. Had been engaged and working with him. Two collars, two leashes, no phone, because with him we never take chances. I just feel so awful when he has these breakdowns. 😟
