Welcome Summer 2021! June 20th is the Official Start of the Summer Solstice

To some this may appear just an ordinary Sunday, but to those waiting impatiently for the official start of summer, it's a celebration! The summer solstice officially begins Sunday, June 20th and ends Wednesday, September 22nd, but that's not all that happens on this day.

Here is a collection of images perfect for sharing or to post on your social media channels! To download, just click on the graphic to pop open a new window with a larger version and save to your phone or computer.

Since this is the start of summertime, here are graphics just for this occasion. 🌞 Did you know June 20th is also called the Longest Day AND National Daylight Appreciation Day?

But wait....there's more! Happy.....
International Surfing Day
National Ice Cream Soda Day
National Seashell Day
National Vanilla Milkshake Day

The roots of the National Ice Cream Soda Day can be traced back to when the ice cream soda was discovered by a soda seller, Robert Green. He created ice cream sodas back in 1874 during the 150th Anniversary of Philadelphia, when, according to historians, he sold cold sodas until he ran out of ice. To make them cold, he used ice cream instead - little did he know that he had created a special kind of drink that will ultimately become extremely popular in all parts of the world. Thank you Mr. Green for giving us this delicious summertime treat! Source: National Ice Cream Soda Day

Here's an easy recipe for making an Ice Cream Soda

Vanilla Milkshake Day is "rumored" to be the most popular flavor of ice cream, and thus, milkshakes. I say rumored with air quotes because Vanilla seems somewhat flavor-less to me, lacking the pizaz of chocolate or coffee or virtually any other flavor of ice cream. However, if you are a fan of vanilla shakes, today's your day.

Observed on the first day of summer, National Seashell Day reminds us to put our toes in the sand and admire the beauty of seashells. It was created by the folks at Sanibel Island in Florida, known as the "Shell Capitol" because the beaches are covered with seashells. Read about it on National Day Calendar.

International Surfing Day: despite numerous assurances from online sources that this is observed on the 20th of June, according to the International Surfrider Foundation it was Saturday the 19th. 😕 Here's their post celebrating the theme "The Beach Belongs to Everyone", Saturday, June 19th 2021:

"Every day, the Surfrider Foundation and our network of volunteer activist's work to protect our coasts. On International Surfing Day, we come together and take a moment to celebrate the waves and beaches that we all love. The theme of this year's ISD is “The Beach Belongs to Everyone.” For decades, Surfrider has championed to keep our beaches accessible and welcoming for all people to enjoy—regardless of race, socioeconomic background, ability or gender identity. This International Surfing Day, we are celebrating the joy and excitement that the beach brings to all of us. Surfing is an amazing gift and the beach is an incredible place that should be healthy, safe and accessible to all people. As surfers and beachgoers alike, it is our responsibility to foster a vibrant, inclusive community that comes together to protect and enjoy this extraordinary resource. See more on their website here.

(Regardless, I'm including some graphics here acknowledging it as the 20th, because it seems many folks believe it to be also on the first day of summer)

I hope you are by now totally in a tropical, hot-weather, summertime state of mind. I'm so ready to enjoy the next couple of months and soak up the events that we missed last year, aren't you? Car shows, watermelon festivals, trips to local ice cream spots and just being part of our community and neighborhood is something I - like probably many of us - might have taken for granted prior to the pandemic lockdown. It felt as if my world had ended in some ways, as the weeks turned into months of cancelations and favorite activities dropped off the radar, and while I'm not a terribly social person I think that's when I realized I missed people and interactions more that I knew. This June so far, has been pretty busy and that's a good thing.....I'm going to remember nothing is guaranteed and be thankful for each day of life and experiences. Happy summer to you and yours!
