One leaped straight out of a mud puddle and climbed on me. π
The scared stray dog someone probably dumped, was so nervous, and each time he jumped it made me jump out of my skin. But we became friends on our walk.
The unsocialized big dog that doesn't know what a kind human is, almost nipped my fingers by mistake while taking a treat.
I was more tired when I got home.
BUT.... the last of us stayed until they just closed up now, handing out bones, replacing wet blankets and destroyed toys, giving each dog a special little treat or a new chew they could work on after the doors close....and in their eyes you can see gratitude and relief and for a moment, a spark of happiness at getting another cuddle, hug, or goodie. That's our WHY we do it; that's the reason volunteers come here in the middle of their work day, just to walk two dogs, or run over to work on training just one dog before heading into work, or take time away from their jobs and families to spend an hour or two here a week. And YOU can make a difference - FREE - it doesn't cost you anything to give your time to distribute love and reassurance to these displaced, abandoned, dumped, unwanted, FAILED.....creatures. Fun fact: many of the regular volunteers have 4 - 5 dogs, or more, or are constantly providing their homes to be foster parents. We're all getting up at 5am to take care of our own packs, just so we can make it to the shelter.
Please. Consider. Volunteering. There is such a desperate need, and with numbers of animals way over the normal limits, your kindness and support is more valuable now than ever before. I promise you will be paid WELL - in wagging tails, the delight of seeing a dog get out in the yard and have a blast chasing a ball, or the hesitant, shy nudge of a little nose bumping your hand after getting to know you.
The shelter doesn't share volunteer posts anymore and I wish they would, so more people could read this. Maybe you'll share it and enough folks can begin to understand how valuable it is to be a volunteer. These are God's creatures, despite being in a facility, despite being let down by humans, and we are the ones who get to make a difference. π©·πΆππππΎπΎ
