Disappearing Delmarva | Things That Aren't Here Anymore

In 2017 I began noting closures of local places on Delmarva, starting with businesses which have left Ocean City. The first post was "Things That Aren't Here Anymore in Ocean City, Maryland", and following that I decided to continue sharing news from all of Delmarva, including Delaware and the eastern shore counties of Maryland and Virginia.

Fi-na-le | Fenwick Island, DE

• January 23rd, 2019 via Delaware Online: "Fenwick Island restaurant formerly known as Fin Alley to close".

• January 21st on the Fi-na-le Facebook page: "Hello friends new and old. I want to let you know that we will not be reopening fi-an-le. We did our best over the last 3 years, however, financially the restaurant did not meet our expectations. So, it is with a heavy heart we must say “goodbye “. See the complete post here.




Shoreglass Wineroom | Ocean City, MD

• January 24th, 2019: a post on their Facebook page announced the restaurant closing. Although it seemed they rallied the following weekend, a few days later they posted the business was permanently closed. See the post here.




The Sands Motel | Fenwick Island, DE


• December 17th, 2018: The Facebook page of the Sands Motel in Fenwick Island, Delaware announced it was officially being demolished. This wasn't really news to anyone as the plans had been in place for some time to gain approval for removal of the old structure and the beginning of new construction for a new luxury hotel. From their post "The Sands was born as the Tingle Motel in May 1948 and renamed the Sands Motel in 1976."




The Big Easy | Ocean City, MD


• December 2018: the Big Easy, formerly the location of Harrison's Restaurant on Coastal Highway, has left the building. Via DelmarvaNow.com: "Ocean City's Big Easy on 60 restaurant closed for good The Ocean City restaurant, located at 5909 Coastal Highway, closed its doors for good this weekend, making the announcement to customers via Facebook on Saturday, Dec. 8th." • A post on their Facebook page from December 8th: "ATTENTION PLEASE SHARE!!!!!!!! I would like to thank all of our customers over the past few years. It has been a pleasure serving you however, we will be closing after this weekend to pursue an opportunity that has arisen that will benefit the entire Hall Family. So this your last chance to stop in and enjoy our great food, drinks and staff." See the entire text here.




Sonic Restaurant | Fruitland, MD


• October 2018 | Fruitland, MD: the Sonic Drive-in suffered an estimated 800K in damages during an overnight fire. In December it was announced the business would not reopen and currently the property is for sale.

• 12.14.18 Sonic Drive-In in Fruitland closed for good after fire via DelmarvaNow





Planet Maze | Ocean City, MD

• October 23rd, 2018, via oceancity.com: After 24 years, Planet Maze — the mini golf course, laser tag and amusements business on 33rd Street in Ocean City, known best for its big, green golf course aliens — is saying goodbye. Planet Maze will most likely be replaced by a five-story Hilton Tru hotel, its construction approved by the Ocean City Planning Commission earlier in the month. See the article here.





16 Mile Brewery | Georgetown, DE


• 9.21.18: "Rumors that 16 Mile Brewery in Georgetown is closing have been circulating online but the company’s management has been tight lipped." Article via Cape Gazette.

• 9.24.28: "16 Mile Brewery in Georgetown closed its doors Sept. 23 after nine years in business. The occasion was marked with a headstone in front of the brewery’s sign". Cape Gazette





Liquid Assets | Rehoboth Beach, DE


• 9.25.18 "Liquid Surf, Skate in Rehoboth Beach, DE to close its doors by Delaware Business Now", announced the Delaware Business Now's Facebook page.

• In a post on their Facebook page November 11th, 2018, Liquid Board shop thanked their customers and fans: "We can't thank all you enough for the outpour of love you guys have shown us these past 11 years & all of you that have come in to say hi last week. Today will be our final day open at the shop so be sure to stop by from 12-6pm! Remember that although the doors are closing our online store will be open 24/7 & we will be keeping it stocked with all of your favorite Liquid Items!"

• 9.22.18 was the announcement on Facebook: "It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Liquid Board Shop will be closing it's doors on Monday October 1st, 2018. We can't thank all of you for your continued support over the years! Talking with everyone, being involved in the local community, & helping to educate those about the sports we love is our true passion." See the entire post @ here. Yummy Sweet Shop | Ocean City, MD


• Fall 2017: After eight years in business they announced the store closure on the store's Facebook page (sorry, I missed it at the time). "It is with a great deal of appreciation that Yummy! Sweet Shop wishes to extend our most sincere gratitude to our customers, for making the last eight years a dream come true. It has truly been an honor to grow along with many of you and be a part of so many special occasions. It's with heavy hearts that we have decided to close our Ocean City location. Given our combined experience in business, retail, and beyond we can say with certainty that you have been the greatest customers! You made the last eight years totally sweet! Thank you! We love you!! We'll miss you!!
