Hard to imagine that Summertime wasn't always my thing, isn't it? I sound like an enthusiastic cheerleader for the oppressive heat and scorching sidewalks, crowded pools and tourist destinations clogged with endless traffic and gridlock....well, no - not exactly my idea of heaven, ha ha. But in the last few years I've learned that the freedom of this season - the recklessness of staying up a) night, going out at 10pm, hopping out of bed at 4:30 to park chairs on the beach and watch an ocean sunrise.....I've learned those are exquisite and magical moments we are given.
It's a time for celebration and cookouts, backyard parties and kids playing in the street. It's a chance for us to be more carefree and joyful, tossing aside some of the weight and burden of daily demands, perhaps allowing ourselves to reconnect with one another, our neighbors, nature and the outdoors. It's a season to breathe deep and stop putting off the things we'd promised ourselves we'd do; buy a croquet set, install a basketball hoop, fill up the driveway with chalk drawings, sit outside at night and talk to strangers.
