Exploring the Delmarva Peninsula | Delaware, Maryland and Virginia

Hi friends! Welcome to a post featuring all my links to various places across the Delmarva Peninsula. You already know I think this happens to be a pretty cool corner of the world to live in, so I finally rounded up a number of my links showcasing our distinctive area in photographs, musings, travel advertisements, articles, familiar signs of the area and postcards.

First of all.....why are we distinctive? Bordered on three sides by water, Delmarva stretches out across three states including the eastern shore portions of Virginia (two counties) and Maryland (nine counties), and Delaware (three counties). The layout of the land technically deems it a peninsula, which is defined as "a piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water", and the Britannica website lists only nine peninsulas in the United States; (Alaska, Cape Cod, Delmarva, Door, Kalaupapa, Lower Peninsula of Michigan, Point Reyes National Seashore, Seward and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan). But geography isn't the only unique thing about this place. The sheer number of historical sites, the normalcy of being in multiple states each day, an endless array of multicultural references and impacts and countless unique towns and communities are what I believe creates the unusual recipe which defines us. Then of course, there's the title which was created by merging parts of each state's name and originally spelled "Del-Mar-Va". I find this article, published in 1982 (I find it amazing it's still able to be read online today); Delmarva: The Island On A Peninsula, offers a great overview to visitors and travelers.

Over the last six years I've shared a number of blog posts for specific cities and counties and finally, for ease in reference, corralled all of them together in this directory. I hope you enjoy sitting back to browse through the advertising, images and postcards which I've collected, and I'm fairly certain they may very well entice you to explore further! As luck would have it, we're accessible (generally in about three hours or so) from many major metropolitan areas such as Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Baltimore and the Virginia Beach/Norfolk/Hampton Roads region. Come on over and find out for yourself just what seems so captivating about our little part of the world!

I hope you found some intriguing places to bookmark for travel plans or just local day trips! Here's one more link you may find useful for reference: Directory of Towns, Cities and Counties of the Delmarva Peninsula. Thanks for checking out my blog and have a wonderful day!
